Grace Mugabe Winning Zimbabwe Power Struggle As The Crocodile Drowns

Robert Mugabe’s former intelligence chief and Gukurahundi mastermind Emmerson Mnangagwa has been fired from his post as Zimbabwe’s vice president, plunging the troubled Southern African nation into further crisis.

Information Minister Simon Khaya Moyo said Mr Mnangagwa, 75  has been sacked for exhibiting traits of disloyalty, disrespect, deceitfulness and unreliability.

Senate President Edna Madzongwe has been sworn in as acting vice-president, reports Mail and Guardian.

The latest developments come after ambitious Grace Mugabe, leader of the powerful women’s league openly declared war Mnangagwa  on Saturday  during a Presidential Youth Interface Rally in Bulawayo and later on  Sunday when she called him a snake and disloyal cadre who has wanted to topple her husband since 1980.

Mr Mnangagwa  was last month also fired from his post as Minister of Justice after being accused of being accused of using the portfolio to target  political enemies .

Mnangagwa, nicknamed the Crocodile, was a hardliner with close links to Zimbabwe’s security services – and a long-time ally of the president, having worked in Mugabe’s office during the liberation struggle in the 1970s.

In the 1980s , Mnangagwa played an active role in the Gukurahundi massacres, which reportedly claimed over 20 000 lives in Matabeleland and Midlands regions .

Mnangagwa’s sudden demotion is likely to pave the way for Grace Mugabe, the president’s wife, to assume more political power,  after next month’s ruling party conference.

Whereabouts of Mugabe not known amidst uncertainty

Zimbabwe’s President Robert Mugabe

The whereabouts of President Mugabe is not known amidst the uncertainty engulfing the country following today’s firing of Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa. In an unprecedented move, Mugabe who was supposed to hold a press conference at 2pm Zimbabwe time did not show up. The statement was read by a visibly shaken Simon Khaya Moyo the Minister of Information, Media and Broadcasting Services.

The President’s motorcade was last seen yesterday heading for his Borrowdale home. It was not know whether  it was carrying Robert Mugabe or Grace Mugabe who had just attended an Apostolic Sect rally at Rufaro Stadium.

Sources within the President’s Protection Unit were also unsure whether the President was still in Zimbabwe or not. They also confirmed that the Presidential Guard has been on high alert with all units reporting for parade this morning.

Military sources have also revealed that there was a no holds barred meeting between President Mugabe and Military Commanders on Sunday to brief them of the then impending removal of Vice President Mnangagwa.

The president is said to have cornered Zimbabwe Defence Forces  Commander General Chiwenga and asked him if he still wanted to serve the country. He reiterated the importance of segregation of duties and respect civilian rule. He informed the military commanders that the matter was purely a civilian issue and he did not expect the military to be seized by the matter.

It is unknown what Emmerson’s response would be but judging by his previous subservience this could as well be the beginning of the end for him.

“That position is a straightforward jacket and must be handed back to the Women’s League. The Women’s League will guide us on the way forward regarding their preferred candidate. However, keeping in mind that the woman Vice President shall be Vice President of the whole nation, Youth League included, it has ignited us to take interest and position in the selection of the woman Vice President candidate.

“It has to be one who is acceptable and with unquestionable loyalty to the party and its principal the President Cde R.G Mugabe and more importantly one without ambitions to work against the President. The only person possessing such qualities is the leader of the Women’s League none other than Her Excellency the First Lady of the Republic of Zimbabwe, Amai Dr Grace Mugabe.”-Herald
