Ex-Zambian Leader Kaunda Dispatched to Convince Mugabe to Give Up Power

Zambian President Edgar Lungu has sent former president Kenneth Kaunda to Harare to try to convince President Robert Mugabe to step down in a “dignified exit” after the military seized power last week.

The ruling party removed Mugabe as ZANU-PF president and first secretary on Sunday and lawmakers from the ruling party were due to meet at the party headquarters on Monday to discuss impeaching the 93-year-old leader.

“Dr Kaunda used the presidential jet and has already arrived in Harare,” a senior government source told Reuters. Kaunda is also 93 years old. Reuters

Zimbabwe Govt Should Function As Usual – Chief Secretary

The Chief Secretary to the Office of the President and Cabinet  Dr Misheck Sibanda is advising all government ministers, permanent secretaries and civil servants in general that government machinery should continue to function as usual, notwithstanding the current state of affairs in the country.

In a statement, Dr Sibanda said all government ministers should continue to discharge their responsibilities in the usual manner and should operate from their offices in Harare.

All permanent secretaries are also advised to ensure that the departments under their purview continue to effectively discharge their mandates for the benefit of the citizens and other stakeholders.

Dr Sibanda said all cabinet ministers and heads of ministries must rely on official communication and not be distracted by statements coming through the social media.

He said cabinet will be informed of the date of the next cabinet meeting in the usual manner.
