Morgan Tsvangirai Funeral Update : Family Says Still Consulting

The Tsvangirai family says it is still consulting on the funeral arrangements for the late former Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai who died in South Africa last night after a long battle with colon cancer.

A visit to number 65 Kew Drive in Highlands also saw mourners flocking in to pay their condolences.

The MDC-T leadership of Ms Thokozani Khupe, Mr Elias Mudzuri and Advocate Nelson Chamisa, among several others, was at the residence and is said to have held a meeting with members of the Tsvangirai family.

Mr Morgan Tsvangirai’s young brother, Mr Manasa Tsvangirai said the family is still consulting on the funeral arrangements.

Earlier on, the MDC-T National Executive Council, which is the party’s main policy implementing organ and supreme decision making body outside congress, held an urgent meeting at the party headquarters in Harare this Thursday morning.

However some of the party’s top leadership who include vice presidents; Khupe and Mudzuri, Mr Obert Gutu and Mr Douglas Mwonzora did not attend the meeting.

Addressing the media after the meeting, the party’s Deputy National Chairman, Mr Morgan Komichi announced that the national council has resolved to appoint Advocate Chamisa as the Acting President of the party for one year, among other resolutions.

Advocate Chamisa described Mr Tsvangirai as a champion of democracy, saying the party is still struggling to come to terms with his death.

He acknowledged that there are divisions in the party, but called for unity, saying in his last days Mr Tsvangirai strove to leave a legacy of unity.

After the press conference, the resolutions passed by the National Executive Council were announced to scores of MDC-T supporters who had gathered outside the party headquarters.-zbc

HARARE, 15TH FEBRUARY, 2018.

On behalf of the ruling ZANU-PF party, Government, our Nation, and that of my family, I wish to express deepest condolences to the Tsvangirai Family on the sad passing yesterday evening of Morgan Richard Tsvangirai, the former Prime Minister of Zimbabwe, and leader of the opposition MDC-T party. A strong trade-unionist and opposition leader, the late Tsvangirai will be remembered especially for his readiness to stretch and reach out across the political divide for a Government of National Unity after the polarizing 2008 elections. Both in and after the Government of National Unity, he remained a national figure who obdurately insisted on free, fair, credible and non-violent elections as a way of strengthening our democracy and our overall re-engagement with the rest of the world.

Whatever other controversial decisions he and his MDC-T party may have made in the past, we all remember him for his insistence on free, fair and peaceful elections which we must validate in the forth-coming 2018 Harmonised Elections in tribute to him and to our democracy. This we owe him as political leaders of all contesting parties in our country which deserves unfettered peace and stability. As part of building political consensus in the country ahead of the Harmonized Elections, I shall soon be inviting leaders of all political parties for a day-long consultative meeting. Indeed the ethic of overarching collaboration above fair and peaceful political contestation must be cultivated and entrenched into our national politics for all times.

As we join the Tsvangirai Family in mourning their dear departed, we pray that the whole Family remains united to give the deceased a dignified send-off. Consultations are underway in Government and with the Family to determine what else Government needs to do to accord the late departed befitting honour.

May his soul rest in eternal peace.

E.D. Mnangagwa
President

Zimbabwe Government Offers to Pay for Tsvangirai Funeral Expenses

Zimbabwe is ready to help foot the bill for the funeral arrangements of Morgan Tsvangirai in a tribute to the opposition leader who died after a long battle with cancer, a government spokesman said on Thursday.

Tsvangirai’s death on Wednesday in a South African hospital cast his Movement for Democratic Change party into unknown territory less than three months after the army ousted Zimbabwe’s veteran ruler Robert Mugabe.

Arguably Zimbabwe’s most popular politician, Tsvangirai’s career was ultimately defined by his tussles – bother literal and figurative – with 93-year-old Mugabe, who resigned after a de facto coup in December.

“The Zimbabwean Embassy in Pretoria has been instructed to help in any way appropriate in the circumstances, including assuming the costs that are attendant to the proper handling of the body of the late (Tsvangirai),” said George Charamba, who is also the presidential spokesman.

Zimbabwe’s new president, Emmerson Mnangagwa, has made no public statement yet on the former trade union leader’s death but postponed a trip to Bulawayo in the south of Zimbabwe due to other “pressing commitments”, the state-owned Herald newspaper said.

Elections are due within the next six months in Zimbabwe and Tsvangirai’s illness and now death leaves his party in disarray, to the advantage of the ruling ZANU-PF party, now led by Mnangagwa, Mugabe’s former deputy.

Bitter War Continues In MDC-T As Chamisa, Mudzuri Call For Separate Meetings Despite Tsvangirai’s Death

It seems as the leadership crisis in the opposition MDC-T party will not stop anytime soon after feuding vice presidents Elias Mudzuri and Nelson Chamisa called for separate meetings at two different locations.

At a time when many are expecting the two to be united as they mourn their former principal, Morgan Tsvangirai, who died last night, the feud seems to be continuing. The two fell out after both claimed that they were the rightful acting president when Morgan Tsvangirai was still being treated in South Africa.

Using Microblogging site Twitter to communicate, Chamisa said:

The tragic passing on of Pres MT is a huge blow to the party and the nation. As a party of excellence, we will unite, be disciplined & honour our HERO. A special Executive meeting at 10.  Presser at 11 am Harvest house.

Mudzuri then later posted,

As we mourn our hero, Dr Tsvangirai I want to thank the State for all forms of assistance they have rendered to him and his family and also thank the hospital staff and govt of South Africa for the services rendered All senior officials to meet at his Highlands home 9:30 am today.

Presidents, Friends And Rivals Unite: How Politicians, Notable People Reacted To Morgan Tsvangirai’s Death

Veteran opposition leader and former prime minister Morgan Tsvangirai died last night after succumbing to cancer of the colon at Wits Donald Gordon Medical Centre in Johannesburg. He was 65.  His allies, former allies and rivals all seem united in mourning.

Here is how some politicians reacted to his death:

My brother @SAPresident we appreciate and salute you for the role you played in enhancing our friendship with the People of South Africa. We wish you well in your next phase of Service and Leadership. @MYANC has once again reminded us the importance of strong political parties

To live in the hearts of others is never to die. Your memory will forever be in the hearts of Zimbabweans. You fought a good fight, RIP Save😞

We are saddened by the death of MT, we will sit and see how Zimbabweans can honour that Great son of the soil.

We are stunnedWe are wordless . He was our father ,our commander, our leaderThe warmest among us ,themost loving of all of us The Founder who when no one dared was the 1st to lift his head & look the dictator in the eye .He took body blows for all of us. He led . We are stunned

Although he has been unwell we are in shock at the passing of Tsvangirai, a true democrat who fearlessly stood up to the Mugabe regime and was an inspiration to many. Although we may have differed politically I held a deep respect for MT. My condolences to his family.MHDSRIEP🙏🏽

Leaders have people that respect and admire them even outside their Parties, as a result the passing of MT is a blow to the Nation at large and MDC should be aware that the country is in mourning too

The decision on whether to confer MT with National Hero status should not be based on ZANUPF affinity but rather on his status as an icon for democracy to the Nation

The colossus of the struggle for democracy in Zimbabwe & beyond has fallen! The people’s hero is gone. May your dream materialize in our lifetime. Thank you for making me believe that change is possible, the courage & to fight for it, & an opportunity to. RIP Morgan Tsvangirai

A sad day indeed. MT is gone. A great Zimbabwean. A committed patriot. An exemplary leader. A distinguished fighter for democracy and social justice. MHSRIP.

Whilst Morgan Tsvangirai undoubtedly is a hero of heroes and deserves this status more than most it is unlikely that ZANU PF will confer that on him. Generally they confer that honour on those who believe in violence or the obscenely corrupt and MT was neither of those. https://twitter.com/voiceofzim/status/963907747149504512

Morgan Tsvangirai deserves to be declared a national hero – that’s if the national shrine is dedicated to those who contributed to building the great nation that is Zimbabwe, those who believed that our best days are ahead of us & those who were prepared to fight for the dream.

1/2 RIP @mrtsvangirai. It has been 26 years since I first worked with you in 1992. From the trenches of the trade union movement of ZCTU to serving as your Deputy President in the MDC for the past 12 years, I can truly say you, Mr President, are a true democrat.

The EFF sends revolutionary condolences on the passing of MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai

May his soul rest in power!

Yes he is a true democratic hero. But l think there’s nothing special in our national heroes acre of late. Pliz don’t mix him with vampires and carnivores. We can respect him wherever he lies to rest

When a good thing is done wrongly it does not make it a bad thing. MRT is a national hero in my books, period!

Watching news with great sadness. Zimbabwe has suffered a tragic loss tonight. Morgan Tsvangirai was a beacon of hope for so many during Zimbabwe’s darkest days. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.

Morgan Tsvangirai represented courage and determination in the face of oppression, and gave ordinary Zimbabweans faith to believe in the future. He was one of the bravest political leaders of his time and will be sadly missed.

Photo from when Morgan Tsvangirai, Zimbabwe’s leading opposition politician and his delegation visited me in the States. Morgan spent much of his adult life opposing the murderous Mugabe. Fortunately, Mugabe didn’t do him in– cancer did. RIP

Whether you followed him or not, he had the courage to stand for what he believed in. RIP Morgan Tsvangirai.
