VICE-PRESIDENT Constantino Chiwenga’s wife, Miniyothabo Chiwenga, visited St Giles Rehabilitation Centre in Harare, where she praised the institution for the work it is doing in helping people with disabilities.
During her tour, Chiwenga said she was impressed by the dedication of the staff and management to assisting patients who are unable to walk or talk, helping them to regain their abilities and live with dignity.
“I heard there are people who came here not even able to walk or talk, but they are helped to their maximum capacity and they have improved,” she said.
Chiwenga commended the St Giles board and management for maintaining the facility and engaging partners who provide assistance.
“We may also be patients here one day, so it is our duty to help while we can,” she said, promising to return and continue supporting the institution.
St Giles acting chief executive and medical director Abel Mazire said the rehabilitation centre needed modern equipment and improved infrastructure to better serve patients.
“Most of the equipment we have is more than 10 years old, and we have many patients waiting to use it,” he said.
“We also need appliances such as hearing aids and specialised sundries that are difficult to find locally.”
He added that some of the centre’s buildings, including the children’s section, required a facelift.
Brethren Manzongo, the board chairperson said St Giles was a factory of rebuilding lives offering integrated rehabilitation programmes for patients recovering from medical and neurological conditions.
“In occupational therapy, patients are trained to resume daily activities like cooking, bathing and dressing for themselves,” he said.
“Physiotherapy assists those with neurological conditions to walk again and rebuild muscle strength, while speech therapy helps patients who have lost the ability to talk, swallow or eat on their own to regain those functions.
“Rehabilitation takes time, but we have seen children and adults alike leave here in a far better condition than when they arrived.”
St Giles Rehabilitation Centre provides therapy, education, and rehabilitation services for children and adults with physical and neurological disabilities.
