Bosso presses panic button

BULAWAYO - Bulawayo giants Highlanders have appointed well-travelled coach, Cosmas “Tsano” Zulu to lead their club on an interim basis after axing Bongani Mafu and his entire technical team.

Zulu will be assisted by Amin Soma-Phiri and Melusi Sibanda while Vezigama Dlodlo takes over as the new manager replacing the late Willard Mashinkila-Khumalo who died last week.

Highlanders’ chairman Peter Dube said the decision to part ways with the technical team was in the club’s best interests.

“It’s not easy to please everyone at the club but some decisions have to be made. We all agree we are not sitting comfortably on the log and we have been hot and cold throughout the season,” Dube said.

“The decisions we have made are in the best interest of the club. We have made a decision to dissolve the technical department with immediate effect.

“Bongani Mafu, Mandla Mpofu, Peter Nkomo and Netsai Moyo are no longer part of the Highlanders technical department. The decision came after a string of poor results and we made serious considerations.

“They will be replaced by Cosmas “Tsano” Zulu who is going to be the head coach assisted by Amini Soma Phiri and Melusi Sibanda. They will take charge of the team until the end of the season.”

Mafu was appointed Bosso substantive head coach at the start of the season, taking over from former gaffer Kelvin Kaindu who parted ways with the club in acrimonious circumstances at the end of last season, due to poor results.

The final straw came when he lost to log leaders Chicken Inn last weekend when a howler by goalkeeper Ariel Sibanda, condemned his side to a second straight defeat following a morale-sapping loss to strugglers, WhaWha, the previous week.

The highly-rated Mafu lost 0-2 to ZPC Kariba in Harare on the first day of the season and that defeat was to start a rocky relationship with the fans.

The Bulawayo giants are currently languishing on 10th position on the log table with 25 points from 21 games.

They could find themselves fighting relegation following a string of poor results in their last three matches.
