Chikoko keen to stay in Italy

HARARE - Zimbabwe top basketball player Vitalis Chikoko says he is keen to extend his stay at Serie A side Grissin Bon Reggio in Italy.

Chikoko joined the Italian side early this year from Germany side TBB Trier with the option of renewing the contract for the 2015-16 season.

“Hopefully I will stay here, I just want to talk to my agents and my team so that they will sort out everything,” Chikoko told Italian news agency Daily Basket.

After joining Grissin Bon, the former Prince Edward School power forward, made an impressive debut in April.

He made a 13-minute appearance against Dinamo Sassari, making four blocks and winning five rebounds.

That sensational spell earned him a place in the Serie A record books as it is only second to Gerben Van Dorpe who completed four blocked shots in nine minutes.

“I have stayed here for three months and I think it is a good city, I cannot complain.”

However, Chikoko is not happy about his team’s failure to clinch the title after suffering a 75-73 defeat at the hands of Dinamo Sassari in Game 7 to finish in second place.

“It’s not right to be second, everyone who plays basketball or any other sport wants to be number one,” he said.

Chikoko also refused to be tagged as the best Zimbabwe basketball player.

“I cannot really say that I am the best player in Zimbabwe, there are some good basketball players in my country,” he said.

“There is a guy who is currently playing in Israel D league (Julius Mavhunga), he is also doing well.

“I have a busy schedule for my summer, right now I’m gonna just hang around, and I am also planning to go back home, after home I will travel to America.”

The 24-year-old’s stock has been on the rise making it into the NBA draft in 2013.
