A POPULAR Gweru DJ who had sex with a 14-year-old student was on Monday fined $600 after he was convicted of being intimate with a minor.
Tawanda Mupanemunda (26) lured two girls to his apartment in the city after performing at their school in April this year. He later went on to have sex with one of the girls.
Initially Mupanemunda, popularly known as DJ Mupsy, of Mupsyville Entertainment, a Gweru-based recording company, was charged with rape, but the charges were altered after it was discovered that the sex was consensual.
Gweru regional magistrate Morgan Nemadire fined Mupanemunda $600, failure to pay he would spend six months in jail. He further slapped the accused with a three year jail term, wholly suspended for five years on condition of good behaviour.
In passing sentence, Nemadire said he considered that the accused was a first offender but added that a “heavy” fine was proper considering the gravity of the offence.
The court heard that sometime in April this year, Mupanemunda was hired to perform at a function at the school.
He later went with two girls from the school to his apartment where he had sex with one of the girls, aged 14.
The girl later told her mother what had happened and a report was made to the police, leading to the arrest of the accused person.
