A student teacher with a Marondera-based private school who was accused of indecently assaulting eight under age girls at the school will spend the next 18 months behind bars after he was convicted at the Marondera Magistrates’ Court.
Twenty-four year old Tinotenda Mawoyo who is a music teacher at Wise Owl Primary School and a student from the Midlands State University was convicted by Marondera magistrate Shayne Kubonera who found him guilt of all eight counts of indecent assault.
Mawoyo was sentenced to 24 months in prison of which six months were suspended on condition that he does not commit a similar offence in the next five years.
It was the state’s case that Mawoyo indecently assaulted eight girls, 2 of the urged 12 and 6 aged 11 on June 12th in the school’s music gallery during music lessons.
According to the state led by public prosecutor Emmanuel Dera, the teacher was conducting music lessons teaching students how to play some music instruments when he took turns to abuse the girls on the pretext that he was teaching them.
The pupils made a report to the school authorities who in turn made a report to the police leading to his arrest.
The student teacher had already been suspended by the school following the allegations.
