Theatre organisation’s property attached

HARARE - Masvingo Drama Circle Theatre’s property has been attached for failure to settle a $44 200 they incurred after unlawfully dismissing their former play director and producer Leeroy Gono.

Gono, who had worked for the Masvingo theatre organisation for just half-a-year, had his contract as the artistic director terminated in 2013 under unclear circumstances.

The veteran play director took his case to the High Court which gave a writ of execution to the Sherriff to attach moveable assets which will pay the suit.

The writ of execution reads, “You are required and directed to attach and take into execution the moveable goods of Masvingo Drama Circle the above mentioned defendant of Charles Austin Theatre, Civic Centre, Masvingo and of the same cause to be realised the sum of $44 200 being awarded in damages made in favour of Leeroy Gono, the above mentioned applicant and registered as orders of the High Court of Zimbabwe by order of the court dated April 7 2015…”

Gono told the Daily News his rights were violated by Masvingo Drama Circle Theatre.

“My contract was for three years but I had only worked for six months. I was not given any reason other than an issue of power. I won at the Labour Court last year, through arbitration when I contested against their decision,” he said.

“There was another case they instituted at the civil court wanting me to pay back money received as salaries. I refused to have the case heard at the civil court where a magistrate who happens to be the treasurer of the theatre worked. He meddles in the case and was found guilty of misconduct and transferred to Marondera.

“So after several times of asking them to pay the debt and even asking them for a payment plan yielded nothing hence the decision to attach their property in the hope of recovering my money.”

Efforts to get a comment from Masvingo Drama Circle Theatre were fruitless as the organisation’s treasurer, Doug Hill said he was in a meeting.

He promised to call back with the full details but had not done so at the time of going to print.
