HARARE - Government says the Zimbabwe Football Association (Zifa) misappropriated funds allocated for Warriors players’ allowances.
Sports deputy minister Tabitha Kanengoni-Malinga made the revelations while responding to a question raised by Buhera legislator Joseph Chinotimba in Parliament yesterday.
“Zvinozongobuda tonzwa kuti national team yapuhwa mari nanhingi asi imi muine budget (Every time we hear the national team has been bailed out financially by certain individuals when your ministry has a budget). What is your policy yekuti national team yedu inoita zvisingatinyatdzisi munyika painotambawo nedzimwe Nyika? (What is your policy regarding the Warriors funding so the team can compete well with other nations?” queried Chinotimba.
In response, Malinga said: “We don’t have a policy which compels us to meet the needs of the national team. As government or ministry, we help whenever we can. We hear about those coming to assist, it’s allowed. They should just notify us for monitoring and accountability.
She added: “Looking at the recent Malawi and Comoros games, we supported the team with travel budget. We were not happy that the team went to Malawi by bus when we had paid airfares. We had also availed allowances asi vekuZifa vakaita zvavakaita nemari iyoyo (but Zifa officials misappropriated the funds).”
