Government received a US$5000 donation from the Comesa competition commission to be channeled towards the repairs of damages occasioned by Cyclone Idai.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade Ambassador James Manzou, represented his Minister Ambassador Frederick Shava and received the gift on behalf of Zimbabwe from the visiting delegation.

Ambassador Manzou noted that the team was on a “Fact-finding Mission and National Awareness Workshop on Consumer Protection Law and Enforcement in Zimbabwe,” and took the opportunity to honour their pledge.

Zimbabwe is being configured towards economic prosperity and the arrival of the delegation in the country, “is a timely one, coming at a critical time in our efforts towards enhancing economic competitiveness and protecting the welfare of consumers,” said Ambassador Manzou.

“On behalf of the Government and people of Zimbabwe, receive this donation and request that you convey our sincerest gratitude to the Commission Board for the intervention.”

The donation comes at a time the Government is seized with the restoration of livelihoods for Cyclone Idai victims.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Local Government and Public Works, Mr Zvinechimwe Churu said the Government now is prioritising sanitation and education in the communities affected by the Cyclone.

Mrs Ellen Ruparanganda, chairperson of the board of the COMESA competition commission presented the donation and also talked about the importance of preserving the environment to mitigate the effects of climate change.
