BULAWAYO residents have expressed doubt that the government would be able to pump water from the Gwayi-Shangani Dam to Bulawayo by the end of next year as promised considering several promises that were never fulfilled in the past.

Last Friday, President Emmerson Mnangagwa told Bulawayo residents that next year, Gwayi-Shangani Dam will begin pumping water to the city.

Mnangagwa said government had contracted several companies to install pipes to connect water to Bulawayo.

But Bulawayo Progressive Residents Association chairperson Ambrose Sibindi yesterday told Southern Eye that the promises were unbelievable.

“We are not taking government’s words seriously. We have now become doubting Thomases in the Bible, because those promises to complete the project have been made several times before,” he said.

“We want devolution funds to be managed by people in charge of the project. The people of Matabeleland must make decisions on those projects so that they are completed.”

The project, mooted in the 1920s, is now 59% complete.

Bulawayo United Residents Association president Winos Dube said citizens were looking forward to completion of the project next year as the city’s water crisis had deepened
