ZANU PF MPs have urged government to speed up the vetting of war veterans so that some who are not getting their benefits will be able to receive them. Raising a motion in the august House, Zanu PF Makoni North MP James Munetsi, seconded by Buhera South legislator Joseph Chinotimba, said government must address the issue of war veterans’ welfare.

“Deeply concerned at the ever deteriorating welfare conditions of victims of the liberation struggle, now, therefore, urges the government to collate and compile an accurate database of all those liberation war victims who have not yet been compensated.

“We urge government to expedite the vetting of all victims who assisted during the liberation war; expeditiously compensate all such victims in whatever way as a sign of appreciation for their assistance and collaboration.

“…must provide wheel chairs and pay for their medical expenses, particularly surgery for those who still have bullets lodged in their bodies and whose eyesight and ears were affected by the effects of shrapnel and other fragments during the war.”

Munetsi said the freedom and peace that Zimbabweans are currently enjoying came through the sacrifice of the precious lives of gallant men and women who took up arms to fight injustices perpetrated against the masses by colonialists.

“…Cognisant that there has been procrastination in the process of recognising,  compensating and vetting the liberation war victims who suffered various forms of disability during the war. We are disturbed by the fact that liberation war victims have been left vulnerable as evidenced by their inability to access medical services, food, decent accommodation and school fees for their families.”
