SCHOOLS reopened today, with the majority of learners returning safely following commendable efforts by public transporters and private drivers who largely adhered to road safety regulations.

However, the back-to-school rush exposed logistical shortcomings that left some children stranded or delayed.

While the overall transition was smooth, the Passengers Association of Zimbabwe (PAZ) expressed concern over several avoidable challenges, including the use of unroadworthy vehicles and traffic gridlocks in major cities.

PAZ national coordinator, Mr Tafadzwa Goliati, praised responsible drivers but warned that the use of unsafe vehicles by some parents posed a risk.

“We acknowledge and applaud the professionalism shown by many school transport operators. However, it is unacceptable that some parents are still transporting children in unroadworthy vehicles, endangering lives,” said Mr Goliati.

He said last-minute shopping and delayed bank payments contributed to the chaos witnessed in some areas.

“Some parents were seen rushing to shops and banks on the very morning of reopening, holding up scheduled school transport services,” Mr Goliati said.

In several cases, children were only allowed to board hired transport after their parents and guardians has produced proof of school fee payments.
