PRESIDENT Mnangagwa has conferred honours and awards on 36 senior police officers, including Commissioner-General Stephen Mutamba, for their outstanding work in combating crime and national development.
Other senior officers awarded include Deputy Commissioner Generals, Dr Mind Elliot Ngirandi, Learn Ncube, Lorraine Chipato and national police spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi.
The conferment of awards was announced by the Registrar of Honours in a Government Gazette published last Friday.
“It is hereby notified in terms of section 5(1)(c) of the Honours and Awards Act (Chapter 10:11), that His Excellency the President and Grand Master of the Order of Merit has granted the following awards,” reads the notice.
Comm-Gen Mutamba and his three deputies were conferred with the Order of the Star of Zimbabwe (Gold). About 32 senior police officers were conferred with Commander of the Zimbabwe Order of Merit (CZM).
A ceremony to confer the awards is expected to be held soon.
Some of the senior police officers include Abigail Moyo, Douglas Nyakutsikwa, Conneli Dube, Ndofandaedza Jaboon, Fredrick Mbengwa, Elizabeth Phiri, Tambudzai Joyleen Mazambani, Lyman Tapera Sithole, Wonder Tembo, Wicklef Makamache, Dr Edward Fusire, Charles Nhete, Gift Hlabiso, Crispen Charumbira, Patson Nyabadza, Bazibi Dube, Steven Kazingizi, Nelson Charumbira, Sundirai Grace Ndou, Martin Matembo Nyirenda, Dr Arnold Makomo, Taonei Nyazema, Jealous Nyabasa, Silungile Ndlovu, Dr Edward Tshuma Maxwel Chikunguru, Dr Clancy Tapiwa F. Nyamkure and Japser Takaengwa Chizemo.
Others are: Charles Ndoro, Evelyn Taurai Phili, Susan Chemurema and Paul Nyathi.
In the past, President Mnangagwa conferred honours and awards in different categories for various individuals and organisations in recognition of the roles they played before and after independence in transforming the lives of people in the country.
The awards ranged from gold and silver to bronze and were made in terms of the Honours and Awards Act which empowers the President to confer such awards in his capacity as Grand Master of Order of Merit.
Those that have been awarded before include Zimbabwe’s virologist Dr Sikhulile Moyo who was conferred the Order of the Great Zimbabwe in Gold for his discovery of the Omicron Covid-19 variant in November 2021.
Another luminary who was honoured is Dr Mary Mubi who was conferred with the Order of the Star of Zimbabwe in Gold while medical doctor and Covid-19 Response National Coordinator, Dr Agnes Mahomva, was conferred with the Order of the Star of Zimbabwe in Silver.
Renowned and yesteryear philanthropist Jairosi Jiri got the Jairos Jiri Humanitarian Award in Gold while Angel of Hope Foundation led by First Lady, Dr Auxillia Mnangagwa, once got awards for her well-documented philanthropic work.
The recipients got their medals during the Heroes Day commemoration at the National Heroes Acre in 2023.
There were also more than 100 people who were conferred with the Independence Medal in Bronze for their role in the attainment of independence and their role in post-independence Zimbabwe.
Notable people include Zanu-PF Chief whip, Cde Pupurai Togarepi, Transport and Infrastructural Development Deputy Minister Mike Madiro, Minister of State Security and Zanu PF Politburo member Lovemore Matuke.
