A GOKWE woman has been jailed for two years after she was convicted of a bizarre incident in which she drew some blood from a 10-year-old schoolgirl.
She then placed the blood on an HIV testing kit.
Mavis Sibanda, 53, was arrested on Monday.
She appeared before the Gokwe Magistrate Court and was convicted of assault.
Mavis, who is a vendor, pleaded for mercy, telling the presiding magistrate that she has children to look after.
Mavis will spend the next two years in jail.
The incident, which led to her arrest, happened in the morning on Monday near Sai Mart Supermarket in the Gokwe CBD.
She called the Grade 5 pupil to her market stall and then requested the victim’s right forefinger and inserted a needle.
She then drew a blood sample, which she placed on an HIV testing kit.
The pupil reported the case to two men she met along the way.
They took her home and reported the case to her father.
Sibanda was arrested under case number CR 165/5/25.
Before her court appearance, Midlands Provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko, had confirmed her arrest.
“Zimbabwe Republic Police arrested a 33-year-old woman on allegations of assault involving the draining of blood from a 10-year-old juvenile.
“The case occurred in Gokwe Town on 26 May 2025 at about 1000 hours.
“The suspect, Mavis Sibanda, aged 33, of Gokwe, was at her market place in Gokwe town.
“It is alleged, she called a 10-year-old girl who was passing by and injected her with a needle.”
