TRAFFIC police officers’ visibility is set to increase in and around the city after the Zimbabwe Republic Police acquired and deployed into the Central Business District 10 state-of-the-art motorcycles aimed at ensuring that law and order prevail.
The motorcycles will be used to bring to book all traffic offenders.
This comes after there has been an increase in chaos, with motorists disregarding traffic rules and regulations, especially pirate taxi and commuter omnibus drivers.
Most of them endanger the lives of other motorists by driving against the flow of traffic, negligent driving and violating traffic light regulations, among others.
National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi has since urged motorists to obey traffic rules and regulations.
“The ZRP has intensified traffic enforcement duties in Harare CBD through the release of 10 state-of-the-art motorcycles by the Commissioner-General of Police Stephen Mutamba.
“These motorbikes will assist the Police to deal with traffic chaos, lawlessness and unruly conduct in the CBD and all roads which lead into Harare.
“Zimbabweans are urged to report errant motorists, whether private or public service, who exhibit dangerous driving conduct, for the law to take its course,” he said.
In June, police launched an operation targeting 20 000 motorists in Harare and Bulawayo who are wanted for violating traffic light regulations following the implementation of the electronic traffic management system.
Authorities then released the names of these vehicles in batches.
Recently, police also disclosed details of nearly 300 offenders, with 95 motorists having complied with the law since the list was published.
Comm Nyathi confirmed that specialised crack teams had been deployed to track down these errant motorists.
He expressed concern that only 95 motorists had voluntarily come forward to address their violations.
The focus in Bulawayo was on capturing vehicle registration numbers, with plans for an upgrade to enhance the system’s capabilities.
Comm Nyathi emphasised that the electronic traffic management system has recorded a total of 20 000 vehicles openly flouting road regulations.
Motorists or institutions with vehicles on the list were urged to report to the nearest police station and cooperate fully with ongoing investigations.
The initiative is part of a broader effort to improve road safety and compliance. Government has partnered with Vitronic Machine Vision Middle East, a Dubai-based company, to spearhead this project under a public-private partnership.
The initial investment of approximately US$80 million aims to use technology to effectively address various traffic-related challenges.
By holding offenders accountable, police hope to ensure that no individual, regardless of their status or connections, escapes the consequences of breaking the law.
This marks a significant step towards enhancing road safety and compliance in Zimbabwe at a time when fatal accidents were on the rise.
