A 38-year-old Harare man has been remanded in hospital custody under Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS) guard for his alleged role in the violent murder of prominent businessman Joseph Mutangadura last month.
Peter Mutasa was shot during his arrest in Gweru’s Mkoba Six suburb last Thursday.
Mutasa was on Friday remanded in custody by Harare magistrate Sandra Mupindu while admitted in hospital.
Prosecutors said on August 17, 2025 at around 2315 hours, the complainant who is a security guard was deployed at Mutangadura Hideout Farm on duty when he heard the dogs barking and went to investigate.
He spotted two men crawling near the gardener’s cottage towards the main house.
As he approached, he was grabbed from behind and threatened with a pistol.
The assailants, including Mutasa, allegedly tied his hands behind his back with his own shoelaces.
When they demanded the entrance to the homeowner’s bedroom, the guard claimed it was his first day and he did not know.
The group, involving seven men wearing balaclavas and armed with claw bars, hammers, and pistols, then broke through the main door.
They stole the guard’s Okin cellphone.
Six of the accused entered the house, leaving one to guard the security guard, who was later forced into the dining room and made to lie face down.
Shortly after, the assailants brought Mutangadura’s son into the room and forced him to lie down as well.
The court heard that cries were heard from the deceased’s wife, Patience Dambudzo Mutangadura, from the bedroom.
The guard then saw Mutangadura’s son being taken into the bedroom, where he discovered his father lying in a pool of blood after being shot dead while four assailants ransacked the room.
After the accused left the room, the complainant crawled to the bedroom, and Patience untied him.
Mutangadura’s son then used his mother’s phone to alert a relative, Nyarai Rukundu, who informed another contact.
The informant rushed to the scene and took the deceased, his unconscious wife, and their son to Aeden Clinic in Ruwa.
Mutangadura was pronounced dead on arrival.
Patience was transferred to Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals for further treatment.
Mutangadura’s body was taken to the Parirenyatwa mortuary for a post-mortem.
He was buried in Ruwa.
