HARARE – Zimbabwean political activist Rutendo Matinyarare has asserted that Zimbabwe has successfully built a “transformed economy” without reliance on the International Monetary Fund (IMF), highlighting what he described as a $45 billion black-controlled economy serving 16 million people.

In a recent social media post, Matinyarare pointed to the country’s development in banking, insurance, mining, construction, telecommunications, and industry, claiming that Zimbabwe has achieved a growth rate of 6.5% over 24 years without IMF assistance. He contrasted this with South Africa, which he said, despite decades of IMF support, lacks significant black ownership in key sectors and has a black economy valued at $28 billion for 56 million people, growing at only 0.9%.

Matinyarare criticised the IMF’s role in African economies, describing its policies as “anti-developmental” and unnecessary for countries seeking to develop local ownership and control. His comments come amid ongoing debates in Zimbabwe about economic sovereignty, local empowerment, and the role of international financial institutions in the country’s growth trajectory.

The activist’s remarks have reignited discussions around self-reliance versus international support, particularly in Southern Africa, where many governments continue to balance debt obligations with domestic economic transformation goals.
