A BULAWAYO man’s bid to flee after a deadly hit-and-run crash ended in humiliation after angry residents gave chase and handed him over to the police.
Gillan Gumbo (48) of Old Lobengula suburb appeared before Western Commonage magistrate Jeconia Prince Ncube facing charges of culpable homicide. He pleaded guilty and was remanded in custody to 15 October for sentencing.
According to prosecutor Cathrine Kuzu, the incident happened on 29 September along a road leading to the Caravan area in Cowdray Park. Gumbo was behind the wheel of a Nissan Caravan, registration number AHA 1457, when he ploughed into a pedestrian who was crossing the road.
“After hitting the victim, the accused did not stop at the accident scene, leaving the pedestrian lying on the ground,” said Kuzu.
But Gumbo’s attempt to get away was short-lived. Witnesses jumped into action, pursued the fleeing driver, and caught up with him before handing him over to police.
The injured pedestrian was rushed to Mpilo Central Hospital but sadly died upon admission.
Police have since urged motorists to stop at accident scenes and render assistance, warning that fleeing only worsens charges.
