THE Harare City Council has commended ongoing waste collection efforts across the capital, noting significant progress since Geo Pomona Waste Management took over the mandate.
Speaking after leading a delegation from the local authority on a tour of the Geo Pomona facilities, acting Town Clerk Mr Pakhamile Mabhena said the company’s operations had brought visible improvements to the dumpsite.
“We have toured all the units — the encapsulation, which has reduced the nuisance that characterised the previous dumpsite,” he said.
“We also saw the sorting plant and the hazardous waste section, and now we are looking forward to the waste-to-energy component of the project.”
Mr Mabhena said waste collection remains an ongoing process but expressed optimism that service delivery will continue to improve as Geo Pomona deploys more equipment.
“Waste collection is an ongoing thing,” he said.
“I understand there is delivery of the first batch of compactors and tippers, and we hope that as more equipment comes in, collection will improve further.”
He also noted that encapsulation at the site had significantly reduced odours, flies and fires that previously plagued the Pomona dumpsite, marking a major milestone in the city’s efforts to restore environmental cleanliness and efficiency.
