The suspect, who had earlier escaped from a confrontation with detectives from the Homicide unit, sneaked into the police station yesterday morning and opened fire on the officer, identified as Constable Muchechesi, who was attending to other people.
According to sources, the suspect, identified as Vengesai Mutasa, was cornered by detectives at his lodgings at a house in Sunrise, Sanyati, at approximately 10:30pm on Saturday night, but managed to escape naked.
Moments later, he made his way to the police station, where he shot the cop in retaliation.
During the Sunrise shooting incident, Mutasa reportedly shot Homicide detectives in the legs.
The detectives were taken to Sanyati Baptist Hospital for medical attention.
“The incident was like a movie, where the officers were caught unaware and the robbers escaped.
“Two officers were injured in the shootout,” one of the sources said.
They said the detectives were shot in the legs before the robber went to the police station, where he shot dead another police officer.
“He bolted from the scene (of the initial shooting) and landed himself in the charge office.
“From there, he discharged his weapon towards the unsuspecting officer, gunning him down.
“The robber claimed he was doing this in revenge following attempts by the detectives to arrest him,” the sources added.
National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the incident, adding that investigations were underway.
“Investigations are still ongoing, our officers are at the scene right now,” he said.
“We will issue a detailed statement soon.”
