More than 300 students graduated at Rutendo Hall in Mafakose after completing free short courses offered by the Tonganyika Trust, an initiative founded by Hunyani legislator and Tourism and Hospitality Industry Deputy Minister, Cde Tongai Mnangagwa.

The thrust of the trust is to empower communities with practical skills for employment and entrepreneurship.

The graduation ceremony, presided over by Mufakose Ward 36 Councillor, Hilda Ruzani, highlighted the trust’s provision of 11 diverse courses, including detergent formulation, hotel and catering, information technology, welding and design.

The Tonganyika Trust’s training programmes are designed to equip participants with both vocational and life skills, ranging from baking and welding to healthcare, tourism and hospitality.

Speaking to Zimpapers, Clr Ruzani lauded the initiative for transforming lives in Mafakose.

“This programme has given our residents the confidence to pursue new opportunities, which are not just skills, but restoring dignity and hope in our community,” she said.

“The programme is part of a broader effort to reduce poverty and stimulate grassroots economic growth at primary levels,” said Clr Ruzani.

She emphasised that the graduates now have the capacity to create their own businesses and contribute to national development.

“Many of these participants will no longer wait for jobs to come to them. They are now equipped to start enterprises that can sustain their families and uplift others,” she said.

By offering these opportunities free of charge, the trust is ensuring that community members gain the tools to be self-reliant and contribute meaningfully to local development.

In this regard, the councillor also highlighted the alignment of the trust’s work with national development goals.

“What we are witnessing here is a direct contribution to Vision 2030. By leaving no one behind, we are ensuring that every citizen has a fair chance at economic empowerment,” she said.

Clr Ruzani called for continued partnerships between civic leaders and development organisations.

“When the Government, communities, and trusts like this work together, the results are powerful as we can build a Zimbabwe where every ward becomes a hub of innovation and productivity,” she said.
