A MOTORIST from Murehwa recently lost US$800, cellphones and groceries to robbers he had given a lift to Murehwa from Harare.

Itai Ben (34) was driving his Toyota Sienta to Murehwa from Harare around 9 pm when he gave a lift to three men at the corner of Harare Drive and Enterprise Road.

The three men said they were going to Musami. When they arrived at Gosha bus stop, Ben stopped the vehicle to allow the passengers to disembark.

However, one of the passengers who was seated behind him held him by the neck and ordered him to surrender all his valuables.

Acting spokesperson for Mashonaland East, Assistant Inspector Naome Gondo, confirmed the incident.

“Reports are that Ben surrendered US$800 and three cellphones. He also surrendered some groceries, his identity cards, as well as bank cards,” she said.

“The robbers allegedly instructed the driver to drive back towards Harare and upon reaching the 48 km peg along the Harare-Nyamapanda highway, he was forced to stop the vehicle and the suspects disembarked, before they left him with instructions to drive to Murehwa.”

She said police have since launched investigations into the matter and appealed to the public for information which may lead to the arrest of the suspects.

Asst Insp Gondo also urged motorists to desist from picking up strangers.
