MWENEZI East constituency is experiencing a remarkable transformation in water access and community infrastructure development, courtesy of strategic investments from the recently disbursed Constituency Development Funds (CDF).
Located in the drought prone agro-ecological region 5, Mwenezi has faced perennial water woes resulting in the death of herds of livestock due to insufficient water, low agriculture production and poor health and social amenities.
Following the disbursement of CDF to Parliament by the Treasurer, Zanu PF Member of Parliament for Mwenezi East Cde Sheillar Chikomo drilled seven solar-powered boreholes across the constituency, easing water scarcity in her communities.
The boreholes, located at Dip Mpapa (Ward 2), Chivumbulu Primary (Ward 13), Sosonye Primary (Ward 15), Mariot Village (Ward 18), Muzvagwa Village (Ward 14), Juneri Clinic Site (Ward 5), and Batanai Primary (Ward 2), are reflection of Government’s commitment towards uplifting the lives of the rural communities.
Speaking recently to The Herald, Cde Chikomo, who is also the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, applauded the collective efforts by the community in implementing the CDF projects adding that the initiative will also bolster food security by availing various income generating projects.
“This is a game-changer for our region, especially Mwenezi East, which has long struggled with water shortages. I commend the efforts of our residents in Mwenezi East, local leadership and government in making this a success.
“The CDF has enabled us to upgrade school infrastructure, improve hygiene, and create income-generating opportunities. As we continue to face drought challenges, these initiatives will bolster our resilience and food security.
“We commend President Mnangagwa for prioritizing grassroots development and leaving no one and no place behind as we build more sustainable future for Mwenezi East we want to have by 2030.
Cde Chikomo further encouraged the constituency, particularly women and youth, to harness the water provision by engaging in gardening, fish farming, and other income-generating projects that can enhance household livelihoods.
These initiatives are complementing the broader Presidential Rural Development Programme (PRDP), under which government has already drilled over 4,000 boreholes nationwide with plans for the establishment of 35,000 Village Business Units (VBUs), which will serve as hubs for agro-industrial activities, promote local employment and strengthen rural economic growth
The CDF initiatives in Mwenezi East are not only limited to water provision with government spokesperson for Mwenezi District, Mr Rodnoy Kudzanai Ndoro highlighting ongoing construction of school’s infrastructural projects uplifting the state of education facilities in the district.
“Several school infrastructure projects are currently underway to improve learning environments, Chemhara Primary School received roofing sheets, Chingwizi Primary School received cement, Mangondi Primary School received galvanized iron sheets and cement, Marriott Primary School received cement and paint and Mukume Primary School received paint.
“These improvements are expected to enhance the safety, functionality, and overall conditions of educational facilities across the constituency, the initiative stands as a clear example of inclusive rural development, reflecting the government’s commitment to ensuring that no one and no place is left behind.
“With fully operational solar-powered boreholes, improved school facilities, and ongoing support for community development, Mwenezi East is steadily moving towards a future of sustainable growth, improved livelihoods, and equitable access to essential services,” said Ndoro.
