THE integration of Pan-African values with modern operational strategies not only enriches military practice, but also cements bonds that unite diverse African forces under a common banner, Defence Minister Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri has said.
She made the remarks in a speech read on her behalf by her Deputy Minister Brigadier-General (Rtd) Levi Mayihlome yesterday, while officiating at the graduation ceremony of Junior Staff Course Number 42 at Manyame Air Base.
She said the Air Force of Zimbabwe’s continued investment in training was a demonstration of its unwavering commitment to constitutional duty.
“The integration of Pan-African values with modern operational strategies not only enriches military practices, but also cements the bonds that unite diverse African forces under a common banner,” she said. “Your presence here as Sadc brothers and sisters has greatly enriched this training and deepened our solidarity across the region.”
She said regional training cooperation enhances interoperability within the SADC Standby Force.
“Exchange programmes and joint training courses are critical. They ensure that armed forces from different nations can operate together seamlessly, exchanging information, tactics and strategies to respond to common threats.”
The minister commended the AFZ for mainstreaming gender equality within officer development.
“The composition of this course reflects the Air Force of Zimbabwe’s unwavering commitment to the National Gender Policy,” she said. “I salute the Commander of the Air Force of Zimbabwe for steadfastly upholding gender equity across the entire organisation.”
Minister Muchinguri-Kashiri praised the School of Academic and Staff Training for consistently delivering high-quality programmes despite economic pressures.
“It is pleasing that the school continues to resolutely discharge its mandate of providing quality staff training and development programmes to the Zimbabwe Defence Forces, sister security organisations and allied SADC friends,” she said.
“Your training has not been spared from broader economic challenges, further compounded by the devastating illegal sanctions imposed on us by our detractors. Yet, you have remained steadfast in upholding your constitutional mandate.”
Speaking during the proceedings, Air Lieutenant Alouis Nyamhanga said the program reminds students on the weight of the uniform.
“The Minister has not only inspired us, but he has reminded us of the weight of the uniform we wear and the honour it bestows,” he said.
“For this guiding light and for the renewed sense of purpose he has instilled in us, we are profoundly grateful.”
The students gave the Minister a goat named ‘Hatiperi’ and a chainsaw.
Air Lt Nyamhanga said the two items were deliberately linked.
“The goat represents what must be safeguarded. The chainsaw signifies the hard work of building and protecting that legacy, clearing difficulties and creating the conditions for safety and prosperity.”
