VICE President Dr Constantino Chiwenga yesterday visited the Swanepoel family at its Chinhoyi farm to offer comfort following the death of their patriarch, the former Commercial Farmers’ Union president Nick Swanepoel.

His death in May left a profound mark on both the agricultural community and the broader discourse on Land Reform in Zimbabwe.

Swanepoel’s legacy is one of racial reconciliation and agricultural development, pivotal in navigating the complex landscape of land redistribution that took place at the turn of the millennium.

President Mnangagwa had previously hailed Swanepoel as a calming influence during tumultuous times, emphasising his role in fostering dialogue and understanding between differing factions within the farming community.

During his tenure, Swanepoel was renowned for advocating peaceful solutions to the contentious issues surrounding land reforms.

He stood firm against extremist factions within the CFU that sought to resist the necessary changes prompted by the Government’s land redistribution programme.

His proposals, first presented to the Government in 2001, called for collaboration among farmers to effectively tackle land redistribution.

VP Chiwenga commended these efforts, highlighting how they culminated in the historic Global Compensation Deed of July 2020.

This landmark agreement saw the Government committing to compensating white farmers for improvements made on acquired land, addressing lingering grievances from the past.

“In my visit, I aimed to check on the family after Swanepoel’s passing. He was instrumental in establishing the Global Compensation Deed,” said VP Chiwenga.

“It is heartening to see the Swanepoel family, united in spirit, carrying forward the legacy of their father.”

One of the highlights of VP Chiwenga’s visit was the news of the Swanepoel family’s continued success in commercial farming.

The VP expressed joy at witnessing their resilience and commitment to agriculture, noting that they have not only preserved their father’s legacy but have significantly expanded it.

“They are generating electricity at the farm to meet their needs,” he added, emphasising their innovative approach to sustaining their agricultural endeavours. This transition towards renewable energy reflects a broader trend among farmers in Zimbabwe, who are increasingly looking for sustainable solutions to operational challenges.

Swanepoel championed the vision of a cooperative society that serves all citizens, regardless of race. His life’s work is a testament to the importance of dialogue and understanding in healing the wounds of the past.

VP Chiwenga urged the nation to renew its commitment to building a fair and non-racial society, inspired by the values espoused by Swanepoel.

“We must take inspiration from individuals like him, who believed in the strength of collaboration,” VP Chiwenga said.

Family members expressed gratitude for the VP’s visit, indicating it brought a sense of comfort during a difficult time.
