Scores of mourners today thronged the Ngarava homestead in Mhokore village, Chivi in Masvingo, to bid farewell to national hero Brigadier-General (Retired] Mathias Ngarava.

The national hero’s body was this today flown to his rural home in Gororo communal lands, Chivi, to enable his relatives and friends to bid him farewell before burial at the National Heroes Acre tomorrow.

The body arrived in an AFZ helicopter and was welcomed by senior government and Zanu PF officials led by Mrs Rosemary Chingwe, who is the Director responsible for Coordination in the Office of the Minister of State for Masvingo Provincial Affairs and Devolution.

Mrs Chingwe represented Masvingo Provincial Affairs and Devolution Minister Ezra Chadzamira.

Various speakers lauded the Brig- Gen (Rtd) Ngarava describing him as a symbol of unity.

They also thanked the Second Republic led by President Mnangagwa for honouring him with the national hero status.

Others said Mhokore village will not be the same again following the demise of a unifier and a beacon of hope and development.

Mrs Chingwe said as Zimbabweans pay homage to the national hero Brig Gen (Rtd) Ngarava, they must never forget the sacrifices made by the late General and other heroes and heroines to create a free and independent Zimbabwe.

She said that the only way to pay tribute to the fallen heroes was to continue walking the journey towards complete independence for black people.

Family representative, Mr Malvern Ngarava, said they have been robbed of a family unifier and a source of inspiration and pride.

After the send-off ceremony at Mhokore village, that also included a church service, the late national hero’s body was flown back to Harare, where it will lie in state before burial at the national shrine.
