RESIDENTS along Mpandamatenga Street in Pumula North’s Ward 17 have pooled resources to buy and erect solar-powered street lights following the vandalism of council tower lights.
The 81 households each contributed US$15 and purchased 12 street lights, which they mounted along a one-kilometre stretch of the street.
Local councillor Sikhululekile Moyo said she came up with the idea, which was welcomed by residents, particularly those along Mpandamatenga Street.
“It’s an idea I suggested to the community after all our tower lights went off following vandalism. We encourage all our residents in the ward to follow suit and install street lights, which will also help in the reduction of criminal activities,” said Cllr Moyo.
She said a total of 20 street lights have now been installed in the ward.
Project chairperson Mr Nhamo Matsairo said the installation of the street lights has brought a sense of security among residents.
“We have 81 houses that came together and contributed US$15 each. We bought 12 street lights, which we have since installed along our street. The area was too dark, which also encouraged some criminal activities, but now with these lights we can live in peace. The project was started in March last year,” said Mr Matsairo.
Writing in the community WhatsApp group, Cllr Moyo said as part of the ongoing community development project, 20 street lights have been installed in Area Zones 2A and 2B.
“A huge thank you to all the households who contributed to this initiative. Each household chipped in with $15, showing their commitment to improving our community. The total estimated cost for this project is $1 200, and we’re grateful for your support. Thank you for making a difference in our community,” said Cllr Moyo.
She said the project will not only improve visibility at night but also help reduce crime in the area.
“With brighter streets, we’ll be making it tougher for thieves to operate under the cover of darkness. Our community will be safer and residents can feel more secure walking around at night,” said Cllr Moyo.
