City Parking has dismissed claims circulating on social media linking the company to a fatal road traffic accident that claimed the life of a motorist in Harare’s central business district last week, saying it had no interaction with the vehicle involved.

In a statement, City Parking said it was deeply saddened by the tragic road traffic accident that claimed the life of a motorist on January 7, 2026 at the intersection of Robert Mugabe Road and Angwa Street and extended condolences to the deceased’s family and loved ones.

However, the parking management company moved to clarify what it described as misinformation linking its operations to the incident.

“In light of speculation and misinformation circulating on social media platforms, City Parking wishes to categorically clarify that the company had no involvement whatsoever with the vehicle concerned at the time of the incident,” reads the statement.

City Parking said there was no outstanding parking transaction, no interaction with City Parking enforcement personnel and the vehicle had not been clamped at the time of the accident.

The company said it issued the statement in the interest of transparency and to respectfully correct the public narrative surrounding the incident.

Social media platforms had been awash with claims suggesting the motorist may have been fleeing from parking enforcement officers or reacting to a clamping incident, prompting City Parking to publicly distance itself from the tragedy.

“This statement is issued in the interest of transparency and accuracy and to respectfully correct the public narrative surrounding the incident,” reads the statement.

City Parking said it remains committed to ethical operations and the provision of factual information to the public.

The fatal accident has sparked renewed debate around road safety in the capital, particularly in the congested CBD where traffic congestion, pedestrian movement and enforcement activities often intersect.

Police are yet to issue a detailed report on the circumstances surrounding the accident, as investigations continue.
