CHIEF Justice Luke Malaba is expected to officially open the Legal Year and launch the Judicial Service Commission’s 2026-2030 strategic plan at a ceremony slated for today at the Constitutional Court in Harare.

The Legal Year opening is an institutional ceremony that is traditionally held to mark the commencement of the judicial calendar following the upper court’s vacation.

This Legal Year is running under the theme; “Using performance management and technology to ensure quality, inclusive and sustainable judicial service”.

Traditionally held in January, the ceremony highlights the resumption of business in the superior courts and, by extension, the entire judicial system.

Presided over by the Chief Justice, the event provides an opportunity for the head of the judiciary to present an overview of the courts’ performance during the preceding year.

In his keynote address, the Chief Justice also notes achievements, operational constraints, statistical trends in court backlogs and measures taken to curb challenges.

JSC spokesperson Mr Daniel Nemukuyu said Chief Justice Malaba will preside over the main event in the capital.

“The Judicial Service Commission is pleased to announce the opening of the 2026 Legal Year, scheduled for tomorrow.

“The main event will take place at the Constitutional Court in Harare, presided over by the Chief Justice, Hon. Luke Malaba.”

Mr Nemukuyu indicated that similar ceremonies will be held elsewhere.

Deputy Chief Justice Elizabeth Gwaunza will preside over the ceremony in Bulawayo, while Justice Bharat Patel will lead the proceedings in Chinhoyi.

Justice Paddington Garwe will officiate over the proceedings in Masvingo.

Justice Anne-Marie Gowora will be overseeing events at the Mutare High Court.

“We invite the public and media to join us in marking this significant occasion in the judiciary calendar,” said Mr Nemukuyu.

The Legal Year opening is expected to bring together judges, magistrates, legal practitioners, representatives of the Law Society, traditional leaders and other justice sector stakeholders.
