CAMEROON and Algeria could be in trouble with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) following incidents that occurred after their respective defeats in the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Morocco 2025 quarter-finals.
CAF confirmed on Monday that it has opened an investigation after collecting match reports and video evidence indicating potentially unacceptable behaviour by some players and officials during the quarter-final matches between Cameroon and hosts Morocco, as well as Algeria and Nigeria.
“CAF has collected recent match reports and video evidence indicating potentially unacceptable behaviour from some players and officials and has opened an investigation into match incidents during the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025 quarter-final fixtures,” said CAF in a statement.
Although CAF did not name any country or individual in its statement, the incidents under review relate to the two quarter-final fixtures involving Cameroon and Algeria, both of whom exited the tournament at that stage.
Reports from international media covering the matches described heated post-match scenes, with players and team officials (from both Cameroon and Algeria) expressing frustration over refereeing decisions, prompting CAF to review the conduct in line with its disciplinary regulations.
The continental governing body said the matters have since been referred to the CAF Disciplinary Board, which will determine whether any breaches of regulations were committed and recommend appropriate action where necessary.
CAF also revealed that it is reviewing footage of an unrelated incident involving members of the media who allegedly misbehaved in the mixed zone area during the same stage of the tournament.
“CAF strongly condemns any inappropriate behaviour which occurs during matches, especially those targeting the refereeing team or match organisers,” CAF said. “Appropriate actions will be sought against anyone whose behaviour is not consistent with professional conduct at CAF events.”
