Kwekwe City Council has taken a significant step towards improving solid waste management by partnering Geo Pomona Waste Management to oversee its two dumpsites.

The collaboration aims to enhance waste disposal practices and promote environmental sustainability within the city, ensuring a cleaner and healthier living environment for residents.

The decision was made yesterday after a delegation of councillors from Kwekwe, led by Mayor Councillor Albert Zinhanga, toured Geo Pomona’s waste-to-energy facility in Harare on a familiarisation and educational visit.

Following the tour, the council convened a special meeting where it agreed to seek Geo Pomona’s expertise, knowledge and guidance in addressing waste management challenges in Kwekwe.

Speaking after the meeting, Clr Zinhanga said the council is now awaiting its management and Geo Pomona to iron out modalities.

“After touring the Pomona dumpsite and seeing what they have been doing, we resolved to work with them,” he said.

“Actually, we already knew what we wanted because we had done our research and discussed it among ourselves as councillors. After that tour, we had a quick discussion to affirm the decision we had taken at council — to partner Geo Pomona in solid waste management.”

Geo Pomona CEO and Executive Chairman, Dr Dilesh Nguwaya, said the company is ready to work with the City of Kwekwe and other local authorities.

“I am happy that the City of Kwekwe is here to appreciate what Geo Pomona is doing. They want to learn from us, tap into our knowledge and implement it in Kwekwe. Geo Pomona is ready to work with various local authorities and spread its wings throughout the country,” he said.

Kwekwe town clerk, Dr Lucia Mkandla, said the Geo Pomona project aligns with the country’s Vision 2030 agenda.

“We used to think these things were only available abroad, but you have really transformed our perception as a nation — our thinking, our approach to waste management and towards becoming an upper-middle-income economy by 2030,” she said.

“This gives us confidence that we are moving in the right direction, and you heard the mayor speaking on behalf of council that indeed the deal is already done.”

The Geo Pomona waste-to-energy project continues to take shape, with several components of the plant already completed or at advanced stages of construction.
