THE John Landa Nkomo Memorial Trust has reaffirmed its commitment to preserving and advancing the legacy of the late former Vice-President Cde John Landa Nkomo, pledging to uphold his values of unity, peace, social justice, inclusive development and service to humanity.

In a statement to mark the anniversary of his death on 13 January, the Trust said the late nationalist’s teachings continue to guide its work and inspire future generations to build a Zimbabwe anchored in harmony and shared prosperity. Cde Nkomo died on 13 January 2013.

“The John Landa Nkomo Memorial Trust joins the nation in solemn remembrance of the late ubaba uCde John Landa Nkomo on the anniversary of his passing. As we reflect on his life and legacy, we honour a towering freedom fighter and nationalist whose unwavering commitment to unity, service and justice helped shape the moral fabric of our country,” the statement read.

Born on August 22, 1934, and raised in Tsholotsho District, Matabeleland North Province, Cde Nkomo dedicated his life to the liberation struggle and the building of a united Zimbabwe. The Trust said his leadership was defined by humility, integrity and a deep belief in servant leadership, as well as a firm commitment to peace, dialogue and national cohesion.

Beyond public office, the Trust noted that Cde Nkomo was a strong advocate for hard work and education, recognising continuous learning as a cornerstone of national development. This vision was reflected in his drive for the establishment of Landa J Nkomo High School in Tsholotsho.

“His contributions to education and health infrastructure across the country remain enduring symbols of his people-centred vision,” the statement said.

The Trust said Cde Nkomo was also a committed champion of human rights, consistently advocating for the dignity and inclusion of children, women, persons with disabilities, war veterans, youths and all citizens.

A keen sports enthusiast, Cde Nkomo played football in his youth and was a driving force behind Highlanders Football Club, Zimbabwe’s oldest football club. He also served as a patron of the Zimbabwe Football Association.

The Trust expressed gratitude for continued support from His Excellency President Emmerson Mnangagwa and businessman Mr Wicknell Chivayo.

“We are grateful for the support the Trust and the Nkomo family have continued to receive from Government and President Mnangagwa. We also appreciate the support from Sir Chivayo, who has donated various items, including a bus to Landa J Nkomo High School, cash, vehicles and other resources towards programmes that keep the legacy of Cde John Landa Nkomo alive,” the Trust said.

It added that Sir Chivayo also donated US$1 million to Highlanders Football Club, which was close to the heart of the late Vice President.

Among its key initiatives, the Trust constructed Landa J Nkomo High School and a clinic in Tsholotsho in 2013 and continues to support education and health projects in both rural and urban communities.
