THE High Court of Zimbabwe sitting in Chinhoyi has dismissed an appeal against conviction by former Chinhoyi deputy mayor Chipo Mlotshwa, but partially upheld her appeal against sentence.
In May 2025, Mlotshwa was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment after being convicted of fraud in connection with a residential stand scheme.
She subsequently appealed against both the conviction and the sentence at the High Court.
In a judgment handed down on January 20, 2026, Justices Philda Muzofa and Catherine Bachi Mzawazi ruled that the conviction by the trial court would stand.
However, the court varied the original sentence imposed by the court a quo [lower court].
Mlotshwa was sentenced to 36 months’ imprisonment, with 12 months suspended for five years on condition that she does not commit a similar offence.
The remaining 24 months were wholly suspended on condition that she performs 630 hours of community service at Alaska Secondary School, starting January 26, 2026.
The court further ordered that the purchase price involved in the matter be forfeited to the State.
The appeal was argued by Herekiya Maromo for the appellant, while Kessia Teveraishe appeared for the State.
