Special Advisor to the President on Monitoring Implementation of Government Programmes, Dr Joram Gumbo, has toured Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals to assess the progress on the extensive renovations on the facility and the installation of state-of-the-art cancer treatment machinery.
The visit marked a critical inspection of the 1,400-bed referral centre, which is undergoing its first major modernisation in nearly 70 years.
Dr Gumbo, who was accompanied by Harare Metropolitan Provincial Affairs and Devolution Minister, Senator Charles Tavengwa and Health Permanent Secretary Dr Aspect Maunganidze, among other Government officials, expressed satisfaction with the current pace of works.
It emerged that the refurbishment of Adlam House, the primary residence for nursing staff, has reached 95 percent completion, while modernisation efforts at the Mbuya Nehanda Maternity Hospital are well underway, with the contractor targeting a handover of the upgraded maternity wing in the coming months.
“There is [cancer] marked difference from how it looked last time,” Dr Gumbo said. “We have also visited other areas where we were shown where [cancer] machines are going to be installed for various medical treatments. We are definitely happy to see this progress.”
While acknowledging that global logistics for specialised medical equipment can be complex, Dr Gumbo remained optimistic about the completion date.
“We have learned there are some issues pertaining to the delivery of required equipment, which may take time,” he added.
“However, from the contractor’s point of view, they believe that if all goes well, they could be finished by August of this year.”
