CHEGUTU Municipality has outlined plans to expand its town as part of its efforts to attain city status by 2030.

Among the approved projects awaiting development are the Mupfure Tourism Corridor, named after the Mupfure River, located a few kilometres from Chegutu towards Chinhoyi.

The site includes space for a hotel, fitness centre, events centre, educational institutions, and shops, among others.

Chegutu Municipality Town Clerk, Mr Jacob Chikuruwo, said the council has set targets aligned with the Second Republic’s Vision.

“We are targeting City Status by 2030, and while we face challenges as a council, we remain committed to achieving this,” he told Zimpapers this morning ahead of the council’s full council meeting in the town.

“Already, we have sites that have been approved, awaiting occupation. These will bolster our city status ambitions due to the infrastructure to be established there.”

The council is also planning to develop over 20 commercial stands in the Central Business District (CBD), where banks, malls, and a hotel will be built.

In addition to commercial and institutional growth, the council plans to allocate 230 residential stands near the Seventh-day Adventist University.

Chegutu’s national ranking rose from 71 in 2023 to eighth last year.
