A MEMORIAL service for two police detectives who were killed on Sunday morning following a shoot-out with an armed robber in Ndanga, Zaka, was held on Tuesday in Harare.
One of the detectives died on the spot, while the other died on his way to Masvingo Provincial Hospital after they were allegedly shot by the suspect, Daniel Munyanyi of Ndemu Village in Ndanga.
They are Detective Sergeant Bernard Chimbeke (38) and Detective Constable Casper Antonio McKenzie Chitsowe (42).
Chitsowe will be buried in Mt Darwin, while Chimbeke will be buried in Nyanga tomorrow.
Their memorial and send-off service was held at Mkushi Camp and was presided over by Police Commissioner General Stephen Mutamba.
The suspect, Munyanyi (50), has since been arrested. Immediately after allegedly killing the two detectives, Munyanyi fled the scene and was on the run until his arrest in Bikita on Monday afternoon.
National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the arrest of the 50-year-old suspect in Nyika, Bikita.
The arrest was effected by members of the public and the firearm used in the commission of murder cases has also been recovered.
Munyanyi was part of a gang of five-armed robbers being hunted by the police. A team of CID Homicide detectives from Harare, that was tracking the gang, arrested four other suspected robbers.
Police had to beef up their team searching for Munyanyi since his escape after the shootings, with his gun, put the lives of people at risk.
In an earlier statement, Comm Nyathi said: “The two detectives were part of a team tracking the suspect for armed robbery cases which occurred in Harare and surrounding areas.”
Comm-Gen Mutamba expressed his condolences to the Chimbeke and Chitsowe families over the incident and tragic loss.
