The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has launched an investigation into a disturbing child abuse incident captured in a viral social media video, in which a woman is seen assaulting a minor and forcing the child to touch a blazing gas stove.
In a statement on Wednesday, police appealed to the public for information leading to the identification and arrest of the suspect. Authorities also urged the child’s relatives or guardians to come forward and report the case at the nearest police station.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police has taken note of a disturbing viral video involving a child abuse incident in which a woman is clearly seen assaulting a minor and forcing the child to touch a blazing gas stove,” the statement read.
Police described the incident as serious and unacceptable, warning that offenders will face the full force of the law.
“The ZRP is appealing for information which may assist in the identification and subsequent arrest of the suspect. Meanwhile, the relatives or guardians of the minor are urged to come forward to facilitate investigations,” police said.
Authorities added that once apprehended, the suspect will be prosecuted in accordance with the law, potentially facing charges of attempted murder.
The incident has sparked widespread public outrage, with calls for swift action and stronger protection for children.
Police reiterated the public’s role in crime detection, urging anyone with information to report to the nearest station or contact the National Complaints Desk. Child abuse remains a serious offence under Zimbabwean law, with authorities continuing to call for early reporting to protect minors and bring perpetrators to justice.
