ZIMBABWE’S bid for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council received a major boost after Greece yesterday announced its support for the country.
Greek Ambassador to Zimbabwe Anna Farrou said her country believed Zimbabwe will pursue and serve the UNSC with dedication to principles of multilateralism as reflected by its commitment to values of the UN Charter that include respect for international law.
She made the remarks in Harare at the National Day commemorating Greece’s independence from four centuries of occupation from the Ottoman Empire in 1830.
“Commitment to effective and strengthened multilateralism on the basis of the fundamental principles and values of the UN Charter, including respect of international law and peaceful settlement of disputes through dialogue and diplomacy, are cornerstones of the foreign policy of both our countries.
“Greece believes that Zimbabwe will pursue and serve with dedication these principles, values and goals in the framework of the UN Security Council. Therefore, I would like to reiterate the support of Greece to Zimbabwe’s candidature for a non-permanent seat in the UN Security Council for the term 2027-2028,” Ambassador Farrou said.
Ambassador Farrou said both countries share the view that current global challenges facing humanity require collective responses, among them climate change which has hugely affected Africa in particular.
She called for the fair access to climate finance for developing countries.
“Both our countries share the view that the global challenges humanity faces nowadays need collective responses. Greece stands by Zimbabwe and all our African friends in advocating the imperative need for enhanced international cooperation on climate change, and support of the development of developing countries and fair access to climate finance,” she added.
Foreign Affairs and International Trade Minister Professor Amon Murwira, who was represented by the ministry’s Acting Permanent Secretary Mr Nesbert Samasuwo appreciated Greece’s UNSC non-permanent seat backing saying it reflected enduring bonds between the two countries’ common view for a fair international system.
He expressed Zimbabwe’s commitment to a partnership based on shared values and common goals for mutual respect and a strong partnership that allows the two nations’ people to flourish.
“Zimbabwe remains deeply appreciative of the enduring bonds fostered through decades of educational and humanitarian partnership. We stand with Greece in the belief that the strongest bridges are built through people-to-people exchanges and diplomatic dialogue.
“In the spirit of your country’s National Day celebration, we reaffirm our commitment to a partnership based on shared values, common goals and a fair international system that allows both our peoples to flourish. Zimbabwe attaches great importance to our relations with Greece for mutual benefit. We reaffirm our shared commitment to partnership and mutual respect,” Mr Samasuwo said.
The event was attended by Senior Government officials, heads of diplomatic missions attached to Zimbabwe, members of the diplomatic corps, the Greek community in Zimbabwe and business people.
