CHIEF Magistrate Vongai Guwuriro yesterday presided over the swearing-in of 17 magistrates, bringing the total number of magistrates in Zimbabwe to 268.

Those sworn in were Janemary Makonye, Believe Chiramba, Bethel Negato, Charles Kamunjoma, Cleopatra Nyeni, George Guta, Golden Enock Muyambo, Hatizvo Chatikobo, Julian Tendai Madzimamuto, Matthew Takunda Vambe, Oswin Godfrey Fernando, Precious Agness Madzoke, Ropafadzo Pauline Dube, Silvester Tinotenda Chiware, Simbarashe Charingeno, Voster Munyaradzi Makuwerere and Wayne Simbai Moyo.

Speaking on the sidelines of the ceremony, Chief Magistrate Guwuriro underscored the importance of integrity, professionalism and efficiency in the delivery of justice.

She urged the magistrates to uphold fairness and impartiality in their duties, noting that the Judiciary plays a critical role in maintaining public confidence in the justice system.

The magistrates took their oaths of office, pledging to serve diligently and uphold the Constitution of Zimbabwe.

Their appointment comes at a time when the Judicial Service Commission was prioritising improved access to justice, enhanced court efficiency and the strengthening of institutional capacity across the country.

The addition of the new magistrates is expected to ease case backlogs and improve service delivery in the lower courts.
