THREE Zion Christian Church (ZCC) members, who were on a spiritual journey to the Mbungo Holy Shrine in Masvingo, died in a road traffic accident along the Robert Mugabe Highway on Saturday evening.
The accident occurred at the 54-kilometre peg between Murombedzi and Norton at around 7:30 pm, turning what was meant to be a sacred pilgrimage into a scene of grief and devastation.
According to Zimbabwe Republic Police Mashonaland West spokesperson, Inspector Ian Kohwera, the accident occurred after a bus carrying the congregants developed a mechanical fault, forcing passengers to disembark and wait for assistance by the roadside.
“In a tragic turn of events, a Tata truck pulling a trailer approached the scene and attempted to avoid the stationary bus’s trailer that was partly encroaching onto the roadway,” said Insp Kohwera.
“In the process, the driver swerved to the left side of the road, where several passengers had gathered, and struck four people.”
Two congregants died instantly at the scene, while the remaining two victims were rushed to the hospital after sustaining critical injuries.
Sadly, one later succumbed to the injuries, bringing the death toll to three. One survivor, along with the truck driver, sustained injuries and is currently receiving treatment.
The injured were taken to Father O’Hea Hospital, where the bodies of the deceased were also ferried for post-mortem examinations.
Inspector Kohwera urged motorists to exercise extreme caution, particularly as traffic volumes are expected to increase ahead of the Easter holidays and the school closing period.
“Drivers must remain vigilant at all times. In the event of a breakdown, proper warning signs should be placed to alert other road users,” he said.
“Vehicle owners must also ensure that their vehicles are roadworthy to help prevent such tragic incidents.”
