Government has approved Bikita Rural District Council(RDC)’s 2026 budget totalling nearly ZWG 308 million, with a focus on improving service delivery in line with President Mnangagwa’s call to action to local authorities in line with Vision 2030.
The budget will largely be funded from internally-generated revenue, with the devolution war chest accounting for a host of infrastructural projects as the local authority takes the lead in engendering socio-economic transformation.
Bikita RDC chief executive, Engineer Arnold Mtuke, today said this year’s budget seeks to tackle and spur growth in three main spheres, namely service delivery focusing on areas such as borehole drilling, construction of schools and clinics, road rehabilitation, among other things.
He revealed that the 2026 budget also targets local economic development with a focus on supporting small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and investment promotion leveraging on beneficiation prospects for locally available resources such as lithium.
“We are targeting improvement of road networks through maintenance, rehabilitation and improved signage. Roads are the economy, they are key economic drivers,” said Engineer Mtuke.
“We are also planning community hall construction and provision of amenities and sporting facilities at our Duma residential park (Adam’s Park).
“This year we will expand the modernisation drive in Bikita by introducing more traffic lights at key junctions, introducing more street lights and pushing for urban renewal of old infrastructure in the commercial area at Nyika Growth Point.”
Bikita RDC is also planning to create tourism hubs around Chibvumani Hills and Nerumedzo forests due to their heavy cultural appeal to benefit locals.
According to Engineer Mtuke, the council is planning to use internal revenue to complete nine projects, including Matsvange Clinic.
He said devolution funds would be used to complete Dungu and Nerumedzo clinics to further improve health delivery across Bikita, among other projects.
Bikita RDC had boosted its road-maintenance fleet with funding from ZINARA and was also maintaining 400km of road around the district.
At least 60 boreholes across Bikita are earmarked for rehabilitation with council funding and assistance from partners.
Engineer Mtuke revealed that at least five piped water schemes are targeted in wards 5,6, 8, 10 and 14 to improve access to clean drinking water and irrigation of small gardens to boost nutrition.
