Government’s plans to construct Chilonga Bridge across Runde River in Chiredzi are now at an advanced stage, with engineers working on the designs of the bridge.
This bridge will connect the rural heartland of Chikombedzi with Chiredzi Town, the district’s commercial hub.
Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister Felix Mhona said this when he commissioned Mucheke River Bridge in Masvingo today.
Minister Mhona was accompanied by Masvingo Provincial Affairs and Devolution Minister Ezra Chadzamira and other senior Government officials.
In an interview, Minister Mhona said work on Chilonga Bridge will commence soon.
Calls for a new bridge at the site intensified last year after the low-level crossing previously used was swept away during the rainy season.
In the wake of the bridge’s damage, local canoe operators have stepped in to provide makeshift transport, putting the lives of travellers at risk.
Those seeking a safer passage have had to take longer detours via Rutenga or Mpapa Bridge, increasing travel distances by at least 80 kilometres.
In response to the situation, the Government allocated US$2 million for temporary repairs to the low-level crossing to make it safer for light vehicles.
