SALLY MUGABE Hospital in Harare continues to dominate the country’s maternal health sector, recording more than 22 000 deliveries last year, the highest number of births at any single institution in Zimbabwe.

Speaking at the official handover of hospital beds donated by Delta Beverages today, Sally Mugabe Central Hospital chief medical officer Dr Hopewell Mungani said the maternity wing remains the hospital’s most active unit.

“Sally Mugabe is one of the biggest hospitals in the country; in fact, it is the statistics that we come up with,” said Dr Mungani.

“Our busiest unit is the maternity hospital, where last year we delivered around 22 000 babies and the second was Parirenyatwa, probably around 15 000, so you see the big difference.”

The hospital, which comprises four specialised units, currently boasts a total capacity of over 1 400 beds.

The donation from Delta Beverages comes as the Government continues to call for private sector participation in the health sector.

Dr Mungani expressed gratitude for the support and invited further collaboration to help modernise the facility.
