THE rehabilitation of part of Simon Mazorodze Road is scheduled to commence May 11, 20026, as construction of the Willowvale Road traffic circle, aimed at managing congestion at the intersection of Willowvale Road and Harare Drive, is still underway.
This comes after the entire stretch up to Simon Mazorodze Road was opened to traffic in February this year.
In an interview, the Deputy Director of Construction in the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development, Engineer Virginia Mawere, said Harare Drive West, which stretches for about 1.1km, has since been opened to traffic — a visible milestone for the project.
“Harare Drive West/Willowvale Road intersection is now fully open to traffic while active rehabilitation is still underway on the next section,” she said.
Eng Mawere said Gleneagles Road through to the Highfields/Paisley Road corridor is now ready for works.
Stakeholder coordination as well as engagements with service providers have since been made, and relevant stakeholders are standing by to relocate services once the section is closed for rehabilitation.
“Works are also progressing well on Waterfalls Road, which is targeted for completion before the next rainy season, while the Simon Mazorodze Road rehabilitation is scheduled to commence May 11, 2026, demonstrating momentum across multiple fronts.
“Three grade-separation structures are also planned at Willowvale, Remembrance Drive, and Rotten Row flyover, which is a transformative infrastructure for Harare’s urban network,” she said.
Eng Mawere said they shall be diversion routes which form part of an integrated upgrading programme, widening the project’s overall benefit to road users.
These development also comes after last year, the Government acquired two new asphalt plants for Harare and Bulawayo as part of a strategic initiative to build internal capacity and reduce the high costs of outsourcing road maintenance work.
There are plans to deploy at least one asphalt plant in each of the country’s 10 provinces and recapitalise the Department of Roads to enhance road construction and maintenance efforts.
