THE Presidential Hospitals Innovation Programme has been commended for modernising health infrastructure and transforming service delivery at major hospitals in line with the Second Republic’s Vision 2030 agenda.

Speaking during the commissioning of Adlam House and the nurses’ training block at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals by President Mnangagwa in Harare yesterday, Health and Child Care Minister Dr Douglas Mombeshora said his ministry was encouraged by the transformation taking place across major health institutions.

He said the developments would improve service delivery and expand training capacity for health professionals.

Dr Mombeshora said rehabilitation works at Mbuya Nehanda Maternity Hospital were nearing completion and would further strengthen maternal and child health services once finalised.

He said the facilities had become strained due to age and increasing demand, but renovations had restored dignity to the institution while significantly expanding capacity.

The upgraded infrastructure, the Minister said, would double accommodation and classroom space for student nurses.

Prevail Group of Companies, which is owned by Presidential Advisor Dr Paul Tungwarara, undertook the refurbishment.

“This development directly supports our national target of doubling Zimbabwe’s health workforce by 2030, ensuring that we build the human resource base required for a modern and responsive health system,” Dr Mombeshora said.

He said nurses constitute the largest component of the health workforce, with 29 general nurse training schools out of a total of 74 schools dedicated to primary care nursing, mental health nursing and post-basic or specialist nursing.

Dr Mombeshora said the Government launched the pilot Private General Nurse Training Programme on May 4 to broaden participation in training while maintaining national standards.

He said the ministry continued to invest in infrastructure, expansion of training spaces, digital learning systems and improved human environment support.

The Minister said this was being implemented alongside other health sector initiatives, including hospital modernisation, equipment upgrades, strengthening medical systems, and improving maternal and emergency care services.

“Your Excellency, talking about improvement here at Parirenyatwa: last year, under your leadership, Parirenyatwa was able to enter into a partnership and acquire 21 new dialysis machines, which are now operational.

“I thank you for your leadership, Your Excellency. The ministry was able to procure cancer machines through the sugar tax, which you allowed us to use for the management of cancer patients. One of the machines has already been placed at Parirenyatwa and is just awaiting final touches so that it can be commissioned.

“We are also going to put another new machine here at Parirenyatwa and two more machines at Mpilo in Bulawayo.

“Work is already in progress, decommissioning the old machines and installing the new ones. It’s all through you, Your Excellency, and we appreciate that gesture,” Dr Mombeshora said.

Last year, the Ministry of Health and Child Care equipped 25 district hospitals with anaesthetic machines, digital X-ray machines, neonatal incubators and 10 ambulances.

Dr Mombeshora said this was a sign of goodwill from the private sector.

“To the management of Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals, the School of Nursing, tutors and student nurses, I wish to commend your resilience and commitment during the renovation period,” he said.

“We are confident that this upgraded facility will significantly improve training outcomes and working conditions.

“Your Excellency, allow me, on behalf of the Ministry of Health and Child Care, to sincerely thank you for your continued leadership and commitment to strengthening Zimbabwe’s health system.

“Your support for infrastructure development and human capital investment continues to inspire confidence across the sector.”

The commissioning ceremony was attended by Vice President Kembo Mohadi, Defence Minister Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri and other Government officials.
