HARARE – Fastjet captain Charles Chikosi has retired from active flying after an extraordinary 43-year career, marking the end of a distinguished chapter in Zimbabwe’s aviation industry.
Captain Chikosi completed his final flight as Pilot in Command on flight FN8008 from Victoria Falls to R.G. Mugabe International Airport, touching down at 13:15 to a water-cannon salute and a guard of honour formed by fellow pilots, cabin crew and members of the Fastjet team.
His retirement brings to a close a career spanning more than four decades and approximately 20,500 total flying hours.
Chikosi began his aviation career in 1983 as a Boeing 707 Flight Engineer before progressing to the flight deck and qualifying as a captain at the age of 31.
Over the course of his career, he accumulated about 16,500 hours as a pilot, operating across international and regional skies and becoming one of Zimbabwe’s most experienced commercial aviators.
The Airports Company of Zimbabwe Private Limited (ACZ) joined the aviation industry in recognising Chikosi’s contribution, describing his career as an important part of the country’s aviation heritage.
“Airports Company of Zimbabwe Private Limited joins the entire nation in celebrating his remarkable dedication, unwavering professionalism and towering legacy in our skies,” the company said.
ACZ also congratulated the veteran aviator on his retirement, wishing him “blue skies and smooth sailing” as he begins the next chapter of his life.
The retirement comes at a significant time for Zimbabwe’s aviation sector, which is seeking to strengthen connectivity, improve operational efficiency and rebuild the country’s position as a regional aviation hub.
Veteran pilots such as Chikosi represent an important pool of institutional knowledge accumulated through decades of experience, particularly as the industry continues to develop the next generation of Zimbabwean aviation professionals.
His career, spanning the evolution from Boeing 707 operations to modern commercial aviation, reflects the profound technological and operational transformation of the industry over more than four decades.
For Fastjet and Zimbabwe’s aviation community, Chikosi’s final touchdown was therefore more than the conclusion of a flight. It marked the retirement of a veteran whose career has become part of the country’s aviation story.
