THE Masvingo Provincial chiefs assembly has recommended the immediate recall from the Senate of chiefs council deputy president Chief Fortune Charumbira and two other leaders from the province over allegations of undermining the authority of the President.
The provincial chiefs’ council yesterday convened a meeting at Clever’s Hotel on the shores of Lake Mutirikwi where they recommended the recalling of Chief Charumbira together with Chief Nhema (Mr Rangarirai Bwawanda) of Zaka and Chief Chitanga (Mr Felen Chauke) of Mwenezi.
All the three faced charges of allegedly undermining the President.
At the meeting, 42 traditional chiefs voted to recall the trio, while three voted against the move, while three others abstained.
Assembly chairperson Chief Serima, Mr Vengesai Rushwaya confirmed the development last night.
“We have resolved that Chiefs Charumbira, Nhema and Chitanga be recalled and we have written to the Minister (of Local Government and Public Works) and also Parliament for them to be recalled primarily for undermining the President,” said Chief Serima.
He accused the trio of opposing President Mnangagwa when he restored chieftainships that were banished during the colonial period.
“They also undermined the President by refusing to attend installation ceremonies for the newly resuscitated chieftainships which is contrary to their roles and responsibilities as members of the provincial chiefs’ assembly, so we have recommended that they be recalled from the Senate”.
Chief Serima said the provincial assembly meeting also resolved that it was not permissible for any traditional leader to openly go against the President’s wishes.
