A STATE-OF-THE-ART incinerator funded by the United Nations Development Programme is under construction at Mpilo Central Hospital in Bulawayo.

Mpilo chief medical officer Narcacius Dzvanga said the incinerator would assist the Bulawayo City Council in waste management.

“It’s not meant to save the hospital but the city. As you saw for yourself it’s a huge building and it’s going to come with two trucks for collecting liquid waste and other forms of waste,” said Dzvanga.

The facility is scheduled for completion early next year.

“Everything is ready, they have started the recruitment of relevant staff — incinerator operator, electrical engineer, mechanical engineer — once we have the full complement of the staff that is required then they are ready to bring the matter, what they don’t want is to deliver then the thing is lying idle because we don’t have incinerator operator, the engineer, so they are saying once we have manpower ready, they deliver, they train and we are done. For some of the ranks they are basics, drivers, general hands, we can recruit within,” he said.

Dzvanga also revealed the imminent completion of a modern magnetic resonance imaging facility at the hospital, the first of its kind in the southern region.

“The last email I got is that they will be training our radiographers from January 4 to 11 and they have already sent them websites to start looking up certain key elements of the MRI,” he said.

“Once our staff are trained then we are good to go. It’s supposed to be an expensive thing, but I am almost certain that our parent ministry is going to put a cap on how much we can charge so that it remains relevant and assist everyone who needs it,’ he said.

Chinese company, Hunan Business, has given orphans in Epworth an early Christmas present by donating groceries and paying school fees for the academically gifted.

Hunan Business in Zimbabwe chairperson Zhuolin Song said the donation was part of their corporate social responsibility programme.

“The children we are giving are either raised by social workers or aunties or uncles. We are going to pay school fees for 20 learners who are academically gifted,” Zhuolin said.

“We are following the Chinese old saying that instead of giving people fish, you got to teach them how to fish.”

One of the beneficiaries, a learner at St Dominican Convent in Harare, who was adopted by Chinese parents, Jubilance Chipunza, said life had never been the same.

“I was then adopted by my Chinese parents who are now taking care of all my needs. Words are not enough to express my gratitude to them,” she said.

“Our prayers are that the Almighty continues to bless our all-weather Chinese friends who showed us true love.”

THREE Harare church members appeared before magistrate Dennis Mangosi facing a fraud charge after stealing US$29 263 from a club at St James Anglican Church in Warren Park 1.

Barbra Matora (39), Maxwell Chanairwa (51) and Estery Thomu (30) were charged with theft of trust property.

They were remanded to tomorrow for bail ruling.

The complainant is St James Anglican Church Warren Park 1 Diocese Rebecca Savings Club which was represented by Nomsa Amin Nambale.

Prosecutor Grace Mugocheke said in January 2023, members at St James Anglican Church in Warren Park 1 formed Rebecca Savings Group.

Members were each supposed to contribute US$30 monthly.

The money was given to Matora for safe keeping.

The court heard that on December 2, 2023, it was resolved that members should share the money according to their monthly contributions.

Matora became evasive, and a police report was filed leading to her arrest.

She implicated Thomu and Chanaiwa.

AFRICAN countries, Zimbabwe included, are remodelling financing policies in the fight against HIV to make them gender sensitive.

Women Affairs minister Monica Mutsvangwa said inequality in gender financing in the fight against HIV was the leading cause of poverty among women.

“Ladies and gentlemen, during the consultative [meeting] I managed to push for the issue of HIV/Aids and the accountability of non-State actors for financing for gender equality to be included in the Common Africa Position,” Mutsvangwa said during the African Union Session of the Commission on the Status of Women pre-consultative feedback meeting held in the capital.

According to statistics released by UNAids, three-quarters of Africans between the ages of 15 and 24 who are HIV-positive are women.

Experts say this highlights the growing concern of international agencies, African governments and Aids activists over the “gendered” impact of HIV in Africa.

“Contribute to reforming the financial architecture and financial processes to be gender sensitive and invest in women rights institutions and organisations through strengthening and opening spaces for women and girls living in poverty . . .  and demanding accountability from State and non-governmental institutions operating within the jurisdiction of the respective States,” Mutsvangwa said.

She called for inclusion of women in HIV/Aids financing issues and other decision-making processes on health matters.

“To transform the status and condition of women, there must be a recognition of the need to transform policies and services of public institutions with a view to promote transparency and access to information, which is both timely and accessible, so that people, including women living in poverty, can act based on knowledge of their rights.”
